The Australian Government has recently announced
a $252.2 million initiative to encourage the installation of greenhouse
friendly hot water systems. The rebate offers eligible households
a $1000 rebate to replace existing electric storage hot water
systems with solar or heat pump hot water systems.
The Solar Hot Water Rebate is an exciting initiative
to help Australian households cut their greenhouse gas emissions
and energy costs and promote the solar hot water industry. Hot
water heated by an electric storage system uses up almost a third
of a typical household's electricity, making hot water the largest
single source of greenhouse gas emissions from the home. By replacing
an electric storage with a solar or heat pump system households
can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by between 2-4 tonnes
of CO2 and cut between $300-700 off their electricity bill per
year, depending on the type of system and the local climate where
the system is installed. Further details
on the rebate are available from the Solar Hot Water Rebate website,
www.greenhouse.gov.au/solarhotwater or phone the national Solar
Hot Water Rebate hotline on 1800 808 571.
